Research Center for Natural Resources and Environment (RCNRE) is a result of partnership between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and UNILAK. It has been officially launched in November 18, 2016 by Mrs. Seraphine MUKANTABANA; the then Minister in the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and Professor Bai CHUNLI, President of CAS, Dr. Jean NGAMIJE, Vice Chancellor of UNILAK and other officials from Rwandan Government, CAS delegates and UNILAK members.
The center is set to contribute in the areas of fighting climate change, assuring natural resources protection, and improving modern agricultural technology, disaster risk reduction, GIS and remote sensing as well as outreach program to the public.
The Joint Natural resources and Environmental research center was launched at a time when different stakeholders were joining efforts to fight environmental degradation.
In the Africa Action Summit attended by 40 Heads of State and Government on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP22) in Marrakech, Morocco; Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame called for concerted efforts to fight climate change and urged UN member states to honor their commitments.
The research center was launched during the International conference on sustainable environmental and natural resource management jointly organized by UNILAK and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), which coincided with the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)general meeting hosted by Rwanda.
To lead, integrate and deliver multifaceted research solutions in natural resources and environment to meet customer commitments on time. In carrying out this mission, the center for natural resource and environment is devoted to providing training opportunities to the University students and researchers under the mentorship of the center’s local and international recognized scientists.
