Introduction

The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK), in collaboration with the Xinjiang institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), will hold the 4th Annual International Conference on Environment, energy and development (ICEED) on August the 30th, 2017 at Kigali, Rwanda.

The Conference theme” Responsible research in creating a unified foundation for the Sustainable Development” seeks proposals for practical solutions to address the research responsibility to solve complex challenges of sustainable development at local, regional, and global levels.

The aim of the conference is to share and identify practical, evidence-based solutions that can support the sustainability agenda. This 4th ICEED 2017 is inspired from the critical challenge of human, environmental, and economic sustainability concerning the present and future generations in a global-scale context.

This ICEED 2017, follows the International Conference on Sustainable Environmental and Natural Resource Management (ISENRM, 2016) with the theme: Responsible Research and Innovation in Environmental sustainability which occurred in the launching the UNILAK- XIEG joint Research centre on natural resources and environment in East Africa established in 2016 based at UNILAK with  the vision being a champion in “Responsible Research and Innovation in Environmental sustainability” which is in line with the post-2015 development agenda aiming at  ending  povertyprotecting  the planet, and ensuring  prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda for next 15 years.

The complex, interconnected challenges of environmental change and sustainability that we face in the 21st century – such as climate change, disasters , biodiversity loss, water, energy and food security, population growth and rapid urbanization – will never be successfully addressed unless we are prepared to undergo and even embrace profound and possibly difficult transformations to our prevailing social structures, systems and relationships with the environment, from the local to global scale. While we already know quite a lot about the associations between environmental change and persistent and evolving societal problems such as poverty, etc, we still know too little about how to turn these insights into transformative processes that result in more robust and equitable solutions to sustainability and societal challenges. Both new scientific knowledge and other types of practice-based knowledge are needed to make progress.

Based on the above, there is need to connecting researchers and practitioners all over the world in a concerted effort to identify and fill the knowledge gaps pertaining to societal transformations to sustainability.

It is never too late to learn more, find out about how the full diversity of the science and technology community, policy makers, practitioners and researchers from all geographical regions, at local, national, regional and international levels discuss how these major issues that we need to tackle together need to be framed in this challenging period: 2015-2030.

There is need to create the strong foundation that is provided by using research to inform our everyday practices, policies, and analytical approaches so as to provide an international and interdisciplinary forum to promote a deeper understanding of diverse academic approaches to Sustainability practices and to discuss how to design a framework for integrating and structuring knowledge on Sustainable Development.

The 4th ICEED 2017 follows the others series of  International Conference on Environment , energy and Development as an  interdisciplinary forum for social scientists, life scientists, engineers, policy makers, NGOs and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, developments, and applications in all areas of Sustainable Development on the areas of Environmental, Health, Energy, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Issues. The conference will bring together leading academic scientists, researchers and scholars in the domain of interest from around the world.

Finally, this 4th ICEED 2017 aims at  preparing the next generation of leaders in academia, industry, government and civil society with the skills they need to promote sustainability, no matter where their careers may lead them, cannot be overstated.   For sustainability is not a fixed goal but, rather, a dynamic force for transformation that can only be maintained if future thought leaders are prepared to meet the challenges that such societal evolution demands.

To meet these goals, the 4th ICEED 2017 will:

  • Enhance and promote a scientifically-based vision of a sustainable future for the world and its inhabitants.
  • Provide expanded opportunities for international and interdisciplinary collaborations among stakeholders engaged in sustainability issues and research
  • Promote development of a new base of scientific knowledge that is specifically aimed at societal transformation for sustainability
  • Create an active network of researchers/stakeholders with interest in—and concern for— sustainability in a holistic perspective, with environmental, cultural, economic and social concerns intersect.
